- Senior Sciences Writer
Marketing and Communications, WashU Medicine
Marta Wegorzewska, PhD, joined WashU Medicine in 2014 as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Pathology & Immunology. Three years later, she transitioned into science communications. Today, she serves as a senior science writer for WashU Medicine Marketing & Communications, where she covers research and innovation across different departments, including pathology and immunology.
“I write press releases about scientific discoveries from our labs, tell the stories of the people in our community, and highlight the achievements of the researchers and clinicians who create the knowledge that future cures rely on, commercialize innovative technology, and improve patient care,” said Wegorzewska.
Her background includes a PhD in immunology from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). With nearly 16 years of experience in scientific research, Wegorzewska brings a deep understanding of science to her writing. Her role is to bridge the gap between complex research and public understanding, enhancing appreciation for WashU’s groundbreaking work.
“In my role, I help communicate WashU Medicine’s groundbreaking research and clinical innovations to both our internal community and the general public,” Wegorzewska said. “My work contributes to WashU’s mission by fostering greater understanding and appreciation of our scientific endeavors, promoting collaboration and enhancing the university’s reputation as a leader in medical research, entrepreneurship, and clinical innovation.”
Wegorzewska’s commitment to storytelling is very personal. Her interactions with patients, physicians and researchers provide firsthand insight into the compassionate care and cutting-edge work happening at WashU Medicine.
I’ve been equally moved by the care, kindness and respect that I have witnessed in the interactions between WashU Medicine doctors and their patients—experiences that motivate discovery and innovation. Capturing those interactions in a story is probably the best part of my job.

Outside of work, Wegorzewska lives an adventurous life with her family. She and her husband are parents to two young children—a six-year-old daughter and a nearly three-year-old son. When time allows, they enjoy exploring local parks, traveling to their family farm in Northern Missouri and spending time with neighborhood friends. Wegorzewska also finds joy in climbing, reading with her book club and sharing meals with friends.
