Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – WashU Medicine

Jalyn Bonk has been with WashU Medicine since 2022, although her journey with WashU started long before. Bonk, a staff nurse in the plastic and reconstructive surgery department who specializes in breast cancer reconstruction, shared that her passion for her work began as she watched her mother undergo cancer treatment here.

Since she was a little girl, Bonk would come to WashU with her mom for appointments, treatments and checkups. She remembers watching the doctors and the nurses collaborate and work together to help her mom. Tragically, when Bonk was 15, her mother passed away from Melanoma skin cancer. However, those moments in the hospital made a lasting impression.

The compassionate care she received from her medical team, here at WashU, profoundly influenced me and inspired my decision to pursue a career in nursing.”

Bonk feels deeply for every patient and their families. Bonk loves to develop relationships with her patients to better understand them and their needs.  She understands the weight of her role and works toward easing the minds of the patients and families.

“I regularly collaborate with physicians to provide the best possible care and treatments, constantly seeking to gain additional knowledge to better serve my patients,” said Bonk. “Just like the medical team I observed as a child, I aim to make my patients feel supported and understood in all aspects of their care.”

Every day, Bonk is encouraged by her work and believes wholeheartedly in the oath she took as a nurse and the missions of WashU. She holds herself to the highest standard, along with her colleagues.

When Bonk isn’t working, she spends time with her husband and two boys. Balancing her life as a nurse and with her family allows her to live a fulfilling life and make every day special.

I am grateful to be part of the WashU community, where I can make a positive impact on the lives of my patients while being supported by an extraordinary team.
