- Manager of Human Resources & Payroll Services
WashU Medicine Department of Neuroscience
The appreciation and love that Mary Heeley has for WashU is palpable. Heeley, the manager of HR & payroll services for the Department of Neuroscience, has been with WashU since 1987.
“I think our most valuable asset is the people who work for WashU, and if I am helping in any way to bring exceptional people here, then I believe I have contributed significantly to our missions.”
Mary Heeley
She takes great pride in her contributions, knowing that she plays a vital role in the success of the university. In her role, Heeley is responsible for hiring and onboarding students, faculty, and staff members. She also assists with the visa process for international students hired in the department and supports faculty and business leaders with payroll.
Throughout her tenure, Heeley has worked within a strong and supportive ecosystem at WashU Medicine. She credits the physicians she has collaborated with, along with her leaders and mentors, for their guidance, friendship, and support. Because of her positive experiences, she encourages others to seek mentorship within their departments to help navigate their careers at the university.
WashU is truly a great employer with wonderful benefits and growth opportunities, but the heart of this institution is its people and the amazing things they do every single day—from taking care of patients and making scientific discoveries to submitting grant proposals, processing payroll, maintaining our facilities and serving food.”

When Heeley isn’t at work, you can find her enjoying the little things in life. She spends most of her time with her family and friends. She enjoys fishing and boating at her lake house, cheering on her granddaughter at equestrian events and watching Hallmark movies with her husband. Heeley has two children, both of which took advantage of the tuition benefit that WashU offers. Her daughter studied at WashU to become a physician and now works in the Department of Pediatrics. Her son studied at the University of Missouri to later work in the St. Louis Metropolitan areas as a mechanical engineer.
