• Director Office of Biological Safety
Office of Environmental Health & Safety

Susan Cook has been with WashU since 2003, starting out as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Biology. Cook then transferred into the Environmental Health and Safety team and now serves as the Director of the Office of Biological Safety. As the director, she helps ensure that researchers carry out experiments safely and remain compliant with complex regulations.

My role is to help members of the WashU community perform their jobs safely and navigate the sometimes-challenging regulatory landscape.

The missions of WashU play a large part of her “Why” at the university. Cook is proud to support the efforts and contributions WashU makes to care for patients, educate students and safely assist with ongoing research.

For others who are considering a career here, I would tell them that WashU is a world-class institution where you can work with a broad range of talented and dedicated people.

Though she spends her days on her computer with meetings and emails, she enjoys creative problem-solving inside and outside the office. Cook likes to read, spend time with her family, friends and pets, along with using her creative side to put LEGO sets together or puzzles.
